BRAKE, VICTORIA "VICKI" 1913-2013 Summerland pioneer Vicki Brake passed away on May 18, 2013 Victoria Day weekend, just a few months before her 100th birthday. She was born in a cabin in Alberta and moved to Summerland in 1945 where her dream of owning land in the Okanagan Valley became a reality. Vicky was involved in the community by volunteering her time with the Legion and the Hospital Auxiliaries. In 1985 she was honoured to be named one of "Summerland's Good Citizens." In keeping with her community spirit, Vicki had a desire to share her land with the senior citizens of Summerland. An opportunity arose and her dream was fulfilled with the construction of Angus Place Assisted Living center. Her love for her home is remembered in "The Vicki Brake Garden" at Angus Place where she lived for seven years. Vicki was admired for her work ethic, determination, advocacy of higher education, and her ability to create a little paradise where she lived off the land. Her family will remember her love of dancing, bountiful garden, orchard, and red roses. Vicki's home was always open to friends and family where they were treated to homemade soup, fresh bread and cinnamon buns, pickles, fruit pies, pancake breakfasts and a warm bed. Vicki's last four years were spent at the Summerland Seniors Village. Her family would like to thank the staff for their outstanding care and for treating her with dignity and respect. In her final days, Vicki was visited by her loving family. She is survived by her children. George (Ilse), James, Marjorie (Bob Carpenter), seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren. "Keep on Dancing Mom!" Condolences may be directed to the family through providencefuneralhomes.com

BENCE, Winneth May 17, 1941 - May 24, 2013 Winneth "Maw" Bence It is with heavy hearts and incredible relief that the Bence family announces the passing of Maw on May 24th, 2013. Born May 17th, 1941 in Moose Jaw, SK, (I think) to Stoney and Winn Edmands, Maw enjoyed an adventure and love filled youth with siblings Carl, Wendy and Wray. She met and married Jim Bence sometime in the late 50's (I think) and had three stunningly beautiful kids, Tupper, Greg and Wendy. The real details and remarkable story of our mom and her profound impact on so many lives, live on in the hearts and stories of her friends and family. It seemed impossible for mom to not instantly connect with people and start establishing these magic, rich, long term friendships. The depth and breadth of these amazing relationships stretch across western Canada, from her "Her Dominion Girls" in Regina, to her cohorts and partners in crime, those incredible gals in Penticton. Maw's life is encapsulated in the narrative of her life and the retelling of tales that are told, everyday, by so many different people. Everyone who knew her, seems to have a "Maw Moment" that is rich with vivid memories of her smile, spirit and wacky ways. The telling of her stories always end with a huge smile and a hearty laugh. We see Maw's smile and hear her laugh the most in the faces and voices of her 4 true loves, grandchildren Chris, Mason, Morgan and Maiya. Her true passion, no matter how sick or how cold the weather, she never once failed to attend one of the kids events, plays, concerts, dances or games. It is impossible for us, to articulate our true appreciation of the talents, empathy and true compassion of those working at the Cancer and Palliative Units in Saskatoon. Dr. Sami, friend/nurse Janice, Home Care nurse/friend Mary Anne and Dr. Walker and the Ninjas of Nursing at St. Pauls Hospital in Saskatoon are a testament to the amazing level of professionalism in our health care system in this province. Although we are left with a small "Maw-shaped" hole in our hearts, we honour mom's spirit every day by filling that space with a story and a laugh. There will always be a seat at the table of Maw's Corner, with her best friend Melissa, the Strasky Family and of course, cousin Nicky doing their best to carry on the legacy that Maw has gifted to us all. There will be no service, at Maw's request, and please forward all donations to the Palliative Care unit at St. Paul's Hospital, Saskatoon in form of Tim Horton's gift cards.
