Born in Penticton in 1962, Sandy resided in Penticton all his life. He was well known for his highland bagpiping. At an early age Sandy demonstrated an aptitude for music. Starting with the piano, he soon discovered his true musical love, the highland bagpipe which he played for the rest of his life. Throughout his youth he piped competitively in the interior and coastal regions of the province and was a long-standing member of the Penticton Pipe Band before he became an independent piper. You might also remember him from Winter's Office Supply where he worked for 23 years as a sales rep from Summerland to Grand Forks. Eventually he found he wanted to try his hand in construction and spent the last 10 years as a labourer with numerous companies, loving every minute of the hard work. MOFFAT, DERRICK ROLAND STEPHEN...
MOFFAT, Derrick Roland Stephen: It is with deepest regret and immense sorrow that we announce the passing of Derrick Roland Stephen Moffat on the morning of December 1st, 2014, after a brief and valiant struggle with a re-occurrence of esophageal cancer. Derrick is greatly missed by his loving wife Donna, his mother Annie Moffat, mother-in-law Martha Davidson, and his sisters and brothers, Valerie and Jeffrey Moffat, Terry, Cathy and Tammy Davidson and Mike and Susan Parks. He also left behind an army of family, friends, students and co-workers who miss him daily and mourn his loss keenly. Derrick (Tiny) was an imposing figure at 6'8" tall, who could appear intimidating. However, his appearance belied a caring and gentle heart. Funny, filled with imagination and generous of spirit Derrick was a loving husband, loyal friend and dedicated teacher. His chosen profession and true passion was cooking and he dedicated his life to the preparation and sharing of food with family, friends and customers. He graduated from high school in Chase, B.C. and at the age of 17 enrolled immediately at VCC to pursue his education and apprenticeship in Vancouver, B.C. He worked in Vancouver in several establishments, including Someplace Else Restaurant, The Queen Elizabeth Theatre Restaurant, Horizon's on Burnaby Mountain, The University Club and the prestigious Vancouver Club. In 1999 he left Vancouver to take a position in the Culinary Arts Program with the University College of the Cariboo, now Thompson Rivers University. A skilled chef and consultant, Derricks career included many highlights, cooking for Prime Ministers, Heads of State and top CEOs, but catering weddings for friends, providing sumptuous feasts for festive family occasions, taking students on field trips to compete in various events, to Whitehorse to cook for the BC and Yukon Winter Games or to Whistler to cook for the Olympics were his favorite moments, because he could truly share his love of food and his passion for all things culinary in a very real and intimate way. As anyone who knew Derrick knows, good food, good music and good stories were the reward for a job well done .... and so, to honour a life well lived, we will gather at his most recent workplace, the Culinary Arts building on the campus of Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops on Saturday, January 24, 2015 at 3:00 p.m. for a Celebration of Life ceremony followed by what may prove to be the largest kitchen party ever. At that time we will announce the creation of an award in his name for students enrolled in the Culinary program, a tangible reminder of his dedication to his students and his commitment to his profession. Should you wish to make a contribution to this fund, in lieu of flowers, you may send a donation to the Thompson Rivers Foundation, (either by cheque or online) clearly marked the "Derrrick Moffat Coeur d'Or Culinary Arts Award", alternately, you may also bring your donations to the life Celebration in January. Please ensure all donations include your name and contact information. Memorials and other information can be found by searching on the Schoening's website: www.schoeningfuneralservice.com or on Facebook at DC Moffat. I look forward to seeing many of his friends and colleagues there and in the meantime, on behalf of myself, his mum and his brothers and sisters, thank you for your expressions of sorrow and support, and your continued offers of assistance. We all appreciate them more than words can express. In shared sorrow and loss, Donna Moffat

SHEPPARD, BYRON LOUGHLAN: IT I...
SHEPPARD, Byron Loughlan: It is with great sadness that the family of Byron Sheppard Sr. announces his passing on Jan 13, 2015 at 75 years of age after a courageous battle with ALS. Byron was born on April 1, 1939 in Flin Flon, Manitoba. His early years were spent enjoying the outdoors, fishing, canoeing, and sea cadets. As a young adult Byron decided to pursue a career as a Machinist. In 1963 he married the love of his life, Verna and they moved to Calgary and started a family, Byron JR. and Vernon came along soon after. Byron decided to further his career and obtained his Millwright ticket as well. In 1979 the family relocated to Kelowna in order to live near Verna's family. Byron and Alf (Byron's father in law) soon became close friends. The family became hobby farmers and Byron started what would soon become his obsession, junk dealing. Byron was a natural wheeler/dealer and a great salesman, his honesty and down to earth manner was much appreciated. He believed it wasn't how much money you made, but how far you stretched it! He was more than willing to entertain you with one of his many stories. Byron and Verna realized they had a passion for traveling and became "snowbirds" spending many winters in Yuma, Arizona enjoying old and new friends. Two years ago Byron became ill with a horrible disease, ALS, but as stubborn as he was he never let it stop him from doing what he enjoyed. Just one month ago he traveled to Costa Rica with his son, Byron JR, and amazingly went out fishing and caught a 100lb sailfish. He was an incredibly tough and hardworking man who pushed himself to the end and in the end he left on his own terms. Byron is lovingly remembered by his wife Verna, and sons Vernon and Byron JR., daughter in law Connie and grandchildren Shylo and Slader. He is predeceased by his parents Royden and Helen and brother Royden. The family would like to acknowledge and thank the ICU doctors and nurses at Kelowna General Hospital for their care and compassion. A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00 on January 24 at Valleyview Funeral Home (165 Valleyview Road). Afterwards the family invites you back to Byron and Verna's house for refreshment and sharing of stories. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be directed to the ALS society of BC.
