TERADA, Yosh It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Yoshiharu Terada on December 9th, 2012 at the age of 85. Yosh was born in New Westminster on November 19th to parents Kayo and Tasujiro Terada. He was a proud orchardist living in the East Kelowna area for the past 60 years. He had been an active member of the Kelowna Buddhist Temple and the BC Fruit Growers' Association. Yosh was a founding member of the Hinode Home, a senior's residence for Japanese Canadians. He enjoyed music, salmon fishing and reading. A man of many talents, Yosh was a farmer, mechanic, businessman, and craftsman. Proficient with his hands, his tools, and his mind, Yosh enjoyed engineering (some would say over-engineering!) a novel idea into a working prototype, such as a home made pruning rake attachment for the tractor or simply making a stirrup hoe for the garden using a hockey stick. HOPKINS, IDA MARIAN of Penticton, formerly Okanagan Falls died peacefully with her family by her side on December 13, 2012 at the age of 95 years. She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Clark; step children, Julie (Lorne) Stevens, Doreen (Adolf) Gleinzer and Randy Hopkins; eight grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews. RITCHEY, Donald Donald Ernest Amos Ritchey was born in Grandforks, BC on August 28, 1923 as the first child of seven of Belle & Elwyn Ritchey. His middle names were his maternal and paternal grandfathers' names. His father was a travelling salesman; consequently, the family moved many times through the 3 western provinces. Don started school in Regina, spent some years in Abbotsford, with the rest of his education at Rutland Junior Academy in Kelowna, BC. He entered the services in 1942 as a Medic spending several years as a nursing orderly in a hospital in England until he asked to be transferred to the continent closer to the front lines. In Holland he was in a Casualty Clearing Station just behind the front lines where he treated badly injured soldiers from both sides of the war. His family was and is very proud of his military service. When the war was over Don returned home to Kelowna and in 1946 married his High School sweetheart, Claire Reimche. MERTZ, BRUCE Born in Penticton, BC, August 21, 1950. Married Diane Hannas, April 28, 1973. Proud Dad of Steven, June 20, 1976. Passed away peacefully, from coronary disease, in his sleep in his favorite chair, December 13, 2012 at the age of 62. Those left devastated, his best friend and wife of 39 years, Diane; son Steven and his fiancée Lori Dangelewicz, his two sisters Maureen (Don) and their family, and Joan. Also left devastated are his 2 best friends from high school, Jim and Harry and their wives, Donna and Barb, endless relatives and many friends. Everyone loved, admired, respected and depended on him for his strength, advice, guidance and especially his sense of humor. Bruce worked for CN on the railroad from 1973 until retiring at the age of 56. He was renown for his inventiveness and will best be remembered for his "automatic ruler 42 flags" used all along the tracks signaling work ahead to the conductors.
