GILLIATT, John Robert Apr 15, 1930 - Apr 17, 2014 It is with great sadness to announce John's passing. John was born to the late Clyde and Hetty Gilliatt, on April 15, 1930, in Port of Spain, Trinidad, where his mother was born. Soon after his birth the family moved to Barbados and lived there until 1954. The family then moved to Nova Scotia where Clyde Gilliatt's family lived. John went on to university and to travel across Canada living in Nova Scotia, Vancouver, and Calgary. John met his late wife Margarete in Vancouver. They moved to Penticton in 1965. John was a very kind soul who will be dearly missed. In his later years, John and Shirley Cox enjoyed travelling throughout North America and abroad. John was a member of the Penticton Bridge Club, becoming a life master, and enjoyed golfing, swimming, sailing, crib and a good book. As a lover of poetry, this was John's favorite (William Wordsworth): I wandered lonely as a cloud That floats on high o'er vales and hills, When all at once I saw a crowd, A host, of golden daffodils; Beside the lake, beneath the trees, Fluttering and dancing in the breeze. Continuous as the stars that shine And twinkle on the milky way, They stretched in never-ending line Along the margin of a bay: Ten thousand saw I at a glance, Tossing their heads in sprightly dance. The waves beside them danced; but they Out-did the sparkling waves in glee: A poet could not but be gay, In such a jocund company: I gazed and gazed but little thought What wealth the show to me had brought: For oft, when on my couch I lie In vacant or in pensive mood, They flash upon that inward eye Which is the bliss of solitude; And then my heart with pleasure fills, And dances with the daffodils. John is survived by his daughter Tina (Neil Brant), and grandchildren Michael and Benjamin, of Victoria. He was predeceased by his wife Margaret, sister Evelyn Bond and his parents. The family would like to thank all of the fine people who work at the Dr. Andrew Pavilion in Summerland for their outstanding care. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made out to the BC Children's Hospital Foundation.
