Immigrating to Saskatoon in 1952, the brick mason worked hard to build a successful business. This permitted him to enjoy an early retirement, complete with homes in Arizona and the Kootenays, eventuallly settling in Kelowna. Heinz was predeceased by his parents Herman and Hilda and his first wife Sigrid. His life continued as a father of five, husband to Marion, brother, uncle, Opa of ten and great Opa of three. He lived his life large and loved it. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, March 21, 2014 at 11:00 am at the Mission Creek Alliance Church, 2091 Springfield Road, Kelowna, BC. In March 1944, he joined 6 Bomber Group and served back-to-back tours on RAF Pathfinder Squadrons No. 7 and 582, where he was engaged in master bomber and marking trips, and remarkably completed sixty-seven operational flights. He was later awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and bar by King George VI for his "numerous operations against the enemy in the course of which he has invariably displayed the utmost fortitude, courage and devotion to duty." Almost 70 years later, in October 2013, he was proudly awarded the Bomber Command medal by MP Ron Cannan in recognition of his World War II heroic efforts as a Lancaster bomber navigator who served his country with impeccable valour. John served over 30 years with the RCAF before retiring with Elsie to Kelowna in 1973. For several years he developed a passion for gardening, and was an active member of his church, the 883 Wing of the Canadian Air Force Association, the Nordic Ski Club and the Wartime Aircrew Club. The Corrigan family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Orchard Manor, Hawthorne Park who cared so lovingly for Johnny during his stay there, especially Ethel, as well as the Emergency staff at KGH who showed great compassion to John and Elsie in his final hours. STANFIELD, Michael John June 20, 1932 - March 18, 2014 Born in Sheffield, England, Michael first came to Canada in the early 1960s to fulfill his National Service obligation, serving with the RCAF near Montreal. He returned to Canada twice, first to Winnipeg, then to Calgary where he and his first wife, Jean, built a life and raised their four children in the foothills of Alberta. After Jean's passing, Michael was lucky enough to find true love again and married Hanne Blair in 1993. They enjoyed their retirement years together as constant companions in everything from international travel to wandering local hiking trails in the various places they lived. A caring husband, loving father, doting grandfather and great-grandfather, Michael lived life fully and well. He was a successful family physician who also possessed a true gift for watercolour painting and photography, with a keen eye for composition. He was the kind of person who could pick up a pool cue or golf club, having not played either for decades, and be spot on for every shot. He played piano beautifully, nearly every day, and was the organist at a few churches he attended over his lifetime. In retirement, he bought his first computer and an avid techie was born. He learned Danish when he was in his 60s. He had a curious mind, but an ordered one and took great pleasure in marking the beauties of this world, from a junco in the snow on his balcony to a spectacular sunset over Lake Okanagan. He was a slave to his sweet tooth, and a truly wicked Scrabble player who snagged most of the triple word scores - even in Danish. Amazing. Michael died peacefully on Tuesday, March 18 in Penticton, BC, surrounded by his children. We are sad to lose such a bright mind and a man who still had so much to give. He is remembered with much love and many fond memories by his entire family and many friends the world over. The funeral will be held at 2:00pm on Monday, March 24 at Lutheran Church-Our Redeemer in Penticton (1370 Church Street). Michael had many pursuits and passions, so rather than buying flowers please donate to an organization you think he'd like.
