MATHERS, ELLEN ON THE WINGS OF...

MATHERS, Ellen On the wings of her family's love, Ellen Mathers was carried gently into glory just as the sun set on Sunday, August 24, 2013. Born Ellen Campbell on April 21, 1928 in Lachine, Quebec, she married Jim White in 1948. Jim would often reminisce about his fruit-picking summer in the Okanagan Valley. Finally, with a packed-to-the-rafters van and six children in tow, the White family headed west to Kelowna in 1964, settling way out in the boonies, at DeHart and Paret Road (now Gordon Dr.). Jim and Ellen carried in their hearts the tragic loss of three beloved children: infant son Gordon, son Ken and daughter June. Jim predeceased Ellen in 1980. Holding Ellen forever in their hearts are her devoted husband, Budd Mathers; and four grown children - Lorne (Theresa) White, Linda (Wayne) Danforth, Jim (Betty-Anne) White and Chris (Lisa) White. Ellen was also a loving mom to grandson Chris Mazur. Grandma White-Mathers baked countless birthday cakes - and left indelible fingerprints of love - on the hearts of 14 grandchildren (Chris, Lara, Erin, Stephen, Anna, Bethany, Jeffrey, Heather, Michael, Darren, Robbie, Shay, Bobbi and Li) and 21 great-grandchildren. Ellen lived her life simply, with determination to always be on time and to finish what she started, including the Kelowna Across the Lake Swim just months after enduring cancer surgery and treatment. She was rich in all the ways that count, gaining true and lasting treasure in family and friends. She lived for those she loved - and those she loved remember. Her family thanks the caregivers at Sutherland Hills Rest Home for their many kindnesses. Friends are warmly invited to an informal celebration of Ellen's life, well-lived to the finish line, 10 am Saturday (August 31) at the reception room of Springfield Funeral Home. Friends, in lieu of flowers, you may wish to send a gift in Ellen's memory to the Kelowna Branch of JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) or a charity of your choice. That would make her smile! Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.springfieldfuneralhome.com 250-860-7077

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Cynthia Anne Ellen Naomi McDonald-Garbowski of Kelowna and Oyama, B.C. on Aug. 21, 2013 at the age of 49 after a very courageous and difficult battle with Leukemia. She was the loving Mother of Danika and Jamie, Daughter of Madge and Bruce McDonald, Sister of Kerri (Rob) Onken, Brenda (Kevin) Mahoney and David McDonald, and former wife of Vance Garbowski. Cynthia (Cyndy to her family and friends) will be sorely missed by her family and numerous friends. Cyndy will be forever in our hearts, remembered for her infectious smile, laughing eyes and positive attitude. In her own encouraging words, Cyndy posted the following on her Facebook May 15, 2013 - "I finally figured it out. It's not about me and fairness or what I did to deserve this; it's about all of you and what I can teach you through my journey. Maybe it isn't me who needs to learn a lesson, but me who can help each of you learn a lesson. That's what I can learn - that through my journey, each of you can learn something of your own. I like that thought... 'if I can teach each of you something, then perhaps my experience is worthwhile.'" The Garbowski family will be hosting a "Celebration of Life" on what would have been Cynthia's 50th Birthday, September 28, 2013. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Cynthia's name to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada, Suite 310-1682 7th Ave W, Vancouver, BC V6J 4S6 http://www.llscanada.org/ Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.springfieldfuneralhome.com 250-860-7077

STOWELL, Christian DeVere Emerson February 25, 1965 - July 9, 2013 We announce with deep sorrow the sudden passing of our son Christian DeVere Emerson Stowell, 48, of West Kelowna on July 9, 2013. Born in Calgary and raised in Penticton, Christian was rarely without a smile. He sported an easy camaraderie, with a quick witty sense of humour and was a passionately proud father and grandfather. Christian loved hockey, fishing, golfing and skiing and delighted in creating and partaking of good food. Christian excelled at all that he did. We can't count the times that he told us how much he loved his position at the City of Kelowna and enjoyed the companionship of his coworkers. Recently Christian and several old school buddies had a golf game and lunch in Penticton, leaving those friends with one last happy memory. Christian is lovingly remembered by his daughter Kristy Lee (Byron) and grandsons Jake and Chase Etchegary of Iqaluit, Nunavut; parents Ken and Marlene Stowell of West Kelowna; brothers Cliff (Jude) of Peachland and Kenny (Shannon) of Kamloops; nieces and nephews Courtney (Diane), Palmer and Taylan, Joshua (Melissa), River, Jeremiah and Sheana; and mother of his daughter, Colleen Stowell and her family. Christian's bright infectious smile will be remembered and cherished by all who knew him. Christian, we'll see you on the other side. Cremation, no funeral by request.
