hill, alice velma (cochlan) w...

HILL, ALICE VELMA (COCHLAN) Wife and mother, grandma and great-grandma, loyal friend and neighbour, champion apple pie maker, curler, proud Irish descendent and prairie girl - died on Tuesday, February 5, age 97, in Kelowna. Born in a house built by her maternal grandfather near Carievale, Sask., Alice grew up on her parents' farm near Palmer, Sask as the second eldest of five children and the eldest girl. The homemaking arts she learned from her mother in a home that welcomed everyone would serve her well the rest of her life. Alice married the schoolteacher, Don Hill, in 1938, at the height of the Dirty Thirties, with grasshoppers as uninvited guests at their wedding. Their first child, June, was born before Don went overseas as an artillery officer in World War II. Alice and June passed the war years in Palmer, with Alice's parents, Alice working as a telephone operator. Within a few years of Don's return, the family moved to Wynyard, where Don was Principal, and Herbert, where he was Superintendent. By now they had four children, two more having died as infants, Jennifer Donna and Douglas Harold. In 1961 Alice and Don moved into the only new house they ever owned, a split-level in the new suburb of Hillsdale, in Regina, where they lived happily until 1975. Retirement to Kelowna followed, with many more years of exploring the Okanagan in a Datsun pick-up and matching Boler trailer. Alice and Don took great pleasure in hosting old friends from as far back as the Palmer years, and numerous visits from their children and grandchildren to their home in the Mission district of Kelowna. After Don's death in 1992, Alice lived alone for another dozen years or so before living her last years in the excellent care of staff at Mountainview Village. She is survived by three daughters - June Danngren, Fay Karp (Joe), and Susan Van Gasbeck (Allan), all of Kelowna - and son Gerry Hill of Regina, and by her eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held at First Memorial Funeral Services, 1211 Sutherland Ave in Kelowna on Friday, February 15 at 11:00 AM . Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association, 1400-522 University Avenue, Toronto, ON M5G 2R5. arnold (arne) pedersen februar...

ARNOLD (ARNE) PEDERSEN February 26, 1922- February 7, 2013 Arne passed away peacefully in Victoria, BC in his 91st year with family at his side. He emigrated from Denmark to Canada in 1929 with his parents, Jens and Agathe, and younger brother Paul. Canadian immigration officials gave him the name Arnold, but to his Danish relatives he was forever Arne. While homesteading in the Peace River country in northern Alberta, Arne's cherished sister, Ria, was born. In 1937 the family moved to Penticton and found work in the tree fruit industry. Arne subsequently enlisted in the RCAF, was commissioned as a Pilot Officer in 1944, and served as navigator, guiding DC-3 Dakotas across Europe in the latter years of WWII. He met his future wife, Marjory Knight of Penticton -- a member of the Woman's Air Force Command of the RCAF -- on the ship 'Ile de France' on the way home from Europe in 1946. Following a brief stint as co-owner of a taxi company in Penticton, and with a Veterans Land Act loan, Arne and Marjory purchased a small orchard in Naramata in 1950. Over the next two decades, Arne and Marjory expanded their orchard holdings and built "Pedersen's Frugthave" into a going concern. Arne gave back tirelessly to his community and the tree fruit industry in BC, serving as: member and Chair of the Naramata Irrigation District in the 1960s; member of the Board of the Naramata Cooperative Growers Exchange; elected Director for Naramata with the Regional District of Okanagan Similkameen (1972); member and later life member of the BC Fruit Growers Association; Chair of the BC Tree Fruits Marketing Board (1973); President of the Boards of BC Tree Fruits and Sun-Rype Products Ltd (1978-1982) -- where he proudly oversaw major expansion and the introduction of TetraBrik technology to Sun-Rype; and President of the Canadian Horticultural Council (1981). He was a devoted father and husband, an avid fly fisherman and hunter, and self-taught fiddle player who regularly accompanied his wife at the piano. He is survived by Marjory, his loving wife of 66 years, sister Ria Merritt (Roy), children Tom (Carolyn Rymes), Brenda Meiklejohn, and David (Kathee), many grandchildren, a great-grandchild, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews and treasured cousins in Denmark. He was predeceased by his brother Paul (1994) and his infant son, Jimmy (1950). His family wishes to thank the staff of the Broadmead Lodge, Victoria, for their kindness and exemplary care in the final stages of Arne's life. A family celebration of Arne's life will be held in Naramata in the summer. A staunch supporter of the co-operative movement, Arne was a lifelong social democrat who fought for fairness and social equality. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Broadbent Institute, Station B, PO Box 1273, Ottawa, K1P 5R3, would be gratefully appreciated. Remembrances can be sent to tfp@uvic.ca

lewko, katherine (kay) nov 21,...

LEWKO, Katherine (Kay) Nov 21, 1929 - Jan 19, 2013 A beautiful heart that never stopped giving, fell silent on January 19th, 2013 in her 83rd year. Lovingly missed by her sister, Laura Uotuk (nephews Allan & Terry), sons Gerry, Jim (Barb), Jason (Lisa) and Jack (Lynda); brother-in-law Jack (nephew Ken, niece Kim), sister-in-law Anne (nephews David, Ed, Allan), her 10 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. She was born in St. Walburg, Saskatchewan, was married in New Westminster to William, and came to the Okanagan where she raised her family in Naramata. From a Ukrainian background she loved to craft beautiful Ukrainian Easter eggs, make delicious perogies (or pedaheh), and grow fantastic vegetables and flowers. She always greeted her family and friends with a smile that came from her heart and this will be fondly remembered as well as her unmistakable sense of humour. Kay will be deeply missed by everyone she touched with her presence and laughter. A celebration of Kay's life will be held in the spring for family and friends. Kay loved the spring flowers.
