HABKE, George Gunther April 4, 1927 - Germany May 29, 2013 - Calgary, AB It is with deepest sadness that we announce the passing of George Habke, 86 on May 29th, 2013. Born in Gangloffsommern, Germany to Emil and Lydia Habke, the family immigrated to Canada in 1927 when George was 8 months old. He attended the University of British Columbia and graduated with a degree in soil science. He married Astrid Nylund on June 26th, 1954. George worked the majority of his career in the oil patch in Alberta and Saskatchewan and raised a family of 5 children. Following retirement he settled with Astrid in Peachland, BC where he was active in the Seniors Housing Initiative and Grace Lutheran Church, where he helped to build the new sanctuary. George was an avid fisherman, woodworker and gardener and won many awards for his vegetables at the Peachland Fall Fair. He was predeceased by his wife Astrid, his parents and sister Gertrude. He is survived by his children Karen (Dan Maitland), Sandra, Marie, Ian (Audrey) and Leslie, and his grandchildren Leif, Anson, Harrison, Ellen and Emma. George will be profoundly missed. Memorial Services will be held at Grace Lutheran Church in West Kelowna, BC. on Wednesday, June 5, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Salvation Army Inter-Faith Food Bank.
